YouTwit - Check out tweets with Google Maps

Posted by Sathis Raj S On 4:01 AM View Comments

YouTwit presents the last status update a particular user has made along with the location from where the update has been made with the help of Google Maps API. YouTwit is a mashup with Google Maps.

The user is a presented with the map containing the latest status update a particular person has made with their location in any part of the earth. Also, the latest tweets are also presented before you if the particular user is tweeting at that time. The site asks for your Twitter username and password before letting you to view the tweets. If you dont enter the above requisites, you are just presented with the Google Map.

I noticed this : I entered the username of Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk). But the map showed the tweets of different people along with their location from their respective parts of the world which seems similar to Twittervision which we discussed earlier. Then, I tried again with Smashing Magazine's (@smashingmag). I got the same result.

Drilldown:
  • Real Time tweets along with the user's location
Backdrop:
  • Twittervision is better to me

Twittervision - Mapping tweets

Posted by Sathis Raj S On 6:12 AM View Comments

Twittervision follows the same concept as Twittearth, which helps in mapping live tweets from all over the world. Twittervision is a mashup with Google Maps API. Live tweets from all over the world are shown in the map.

To begin with, the user need not do much. Once he enters the site, the map shows up and live tweets from all over the world at the particular time are also shown. The user can also choose the tweets to be in a multitude of languages which ranges from Albanian, Arabic, Bulgarian to Turkish, Ukranian and Vietnamese. A total of 42 languages are left to the users choice to choose from.

Drilldown :
  • Variety of languages to choose from for the tweets to display
  • Live display of tweets
  • Useful to glance at the trend that's taking place.

TweetVolume - Find popular keywords in Twitter

Posted by Sathis Raj S On 12:54 AM View Comments

With millions and millions of people tweeting everyday and with thousands of tweets per minute, its very hard to locate and identify popular keywords in Twitter. TweetVolume is a really useful service which really solves the problem in this niche. TweetVolume is a service powered by Wowza and it makes use of Google and Twitter APIs.

The interface is really simple, yet powerful. Easy to manage and use. All the user has to do is enter the keywords in the textboxes provided and BAM! the user will be provided with a bar-graph which indicates the number of times the search term has been used. Multiple keywords can be compared side by side. A really useful tool for tracking down events, or to compare your popularity with anyone else. (Dont compare it with celebrities, you will be thoroughly disappointed! :P)

I had the urge to compare the bigwigs in different arenas - Google, Mashable, Twitter, Facebook & Apple. And, pretty stunning - the result was expected. Twitter leads the list and it wins by a pretty huge, huge margin.

Drilldown :
  • No login required.
  • Simple interface, powerful results.
  • Maximum of five keywords can be searched side by side.
  • Useful for searching single words and long phrases too.
  • Share chart with your friends.
Backdrop :
  • Logically, we find that Twitter wins heads first in the comparison made! But, what does the number at the bottom of the bargraphs indicate. Are they results for a month, a week or ....? No explanation given in the website, though I have seen a few comments by users regarding the same confusion.

Twitter Charts - Graph your tweets

Posted by Sathis Raj S On 12:22 AM View Comments

Twitter Charts is a Yahoo Pipes/Google Charts mashup. Twitter Charts graphs any users tweets based on a timeline that includes days of the week and by the hour. Twitter Charts is a really great way to check out how much active any user is on Twitter. Also, the engagement of the user with other users can also be found out by checking the chart, because it also reveals the portions of the tweets which are replies.

The Twitter user's tweets are gathered via Yahoo Pipes! and rendered using the Google Chart API. Check out the chart of Ashton Kutcher, the actor with the more number of followers:

The most interesting aspect of this project is that, other than the static files being served up by xefer.com itself, no other server-side processing is being done here; all the processing is being handled by Yahoo Pipes and Google, and of course Twitter itself which is ultimately hosting the raw data.
At the beginning when you enter a new user name, you can find the time taken by the chart to show up is really slow. But once done, you can find the subsequent runs to be faster because of Yahoo!'s caching of the generated output. If you really need to know, how the client side Javascript processing the raw data for Google Charts is done, kindly check it out here.

A really engaging tool to check out how you spend your time on Twitter. Twitter Charts is a product of Xefer.

Scoopler- A Real Time Search

Posted by Simbu On 5:55 AM View Comments

Scoopler is a real time search engine for Twitter. It aggregates and organizes content being shared on the internet as it happens, like eye-witness reports of breaking news, photos and videos from big events, and links to the hottest memes of the day. This is done by constantly indexing live updates from services including Twitter, Flickr, Digg, Delicious and more. When you search for a topic on Scoopler, Scoopler gives the most relevant results, updated in real-time. For an entered topic and the results will update in real time “waterfall” format.

Now updating real time is the in-thing throughout Web 2.0. Just recently, FriendFeed went real time. Facebook is also experimenting with the real time updating thingy. But those services just provide you with the content that's being only updated on their particular sites. Now, the user is given a choice to search through the number of services listed above through Scoopler. But one could easily note that, most of the results that are shown after the search query are very much dominated by Twitter.

The interface of Scoopler is really simple. Moreover, the Peek feature in Scoopler gives a boost to the look of Scoopler. The Peek feature enables the user to take a look at the pages being linked without visiting the actual site. Live updating takes place in the middle. Moreover, popular content relating to the search query are listed at the side where the user can view contents categorized as videos, links and images.

Though there are a lot of search engine which works with Twitter, the real time updating of content gives Scoopler a high-five.

Monitter - Monitoring Twitter trends

Posted by Sathis Raj S On 11:29 PM View Comments

Monitter follows a simple logic - it helps the user in monitoring the Twitter world for a set of keywords and watch out for what people are saying.

What does Monitter do?

The layout of Monitter almost resembles, the famous Twitter Desktop client - TweetDeck. Similar to TweetDeck, Monitter displays a number of Twitter searches parallel to each other. This enables the user to keep up with the trend simultaneously. Initially, Monitter limited the parallel searches to three columns. But now, the user can add or remove as many number of columns almost similar to TweetDeck. All the keywords are searched in real time and the tweets are being regularly updated. Just visualize a stock ticker. Monitter has also introduced a new search criteria in their website which enables the users to know only about tweets only within a certain distance of their desired location. Monitter also provides a widget which can be integrated within websites thus enabling your users to monitor your tweets.

Opinion :

Initially, Cnet has mentioned Monitter is three times better than Twitter Search because of the presence of three columns! But I would say, Monitter is many times better than Twitter Search now.

Twitturly - Tracking Retweeted URLs

Posted by Sathis Raj S On 4:36 AM View Comments

Twitturly tracks URLs being sent throughout Twitter and provides a real time view of what people are talking about on Twitter. When someone sends a URL to their followers, the URL is automatically given a vote. If the URL also retweeted, then the URL is given votes according to the number of retweets. The more votes the URL gets in the last 24 hours, the higher it ranks on the Top 100 Twitturly List. It doesnt matter whether people use the direct link or shortened URLs because Twitturly's spiders visit each and every link before ranking them.

The Top 100 list consists of URLs that are only famous during the previous 24 hours. Moreover all kinds of URLs being sent by robots which are considered spam are also eliminated by Twitturly's extra-smart algorithm. I find it really useful because it keeps the readers updated about the happenings on the Twitterverse. The service is almost similar to that of Tweetmeme minus the dynamic updating service.

What does Twitturly offer?

There are four categories in Twitturly,
  • Everything
  • News
  • Pics
  • Videos
Twitturly also provides a profile search where it lists down all the URLs the particular user has ever tweeted. My Top 100 provides you with the Top 100 URLs the people you follow have tweeted, thus providing a news channel like service.

Twitturly is an amazing tool. Try it out and keep yourself updated.
